Paediatric Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
As a paediatric speech-language pathologist, you will be assessing and treating clients 12 years and under. Your caseload may comprise of:
Late Talkers
The SLP will work with late talkers and their caregivers by providing strategies to encourage communication through play and engaging activities. They will also offer guidance to parents on how to support language development at home, making it a collaborative effort.
Speech Sound Disorders
The SLP will support kids with speech sound disorders through structured exercises to improve the production of specific speech sounds. Activities may include repetition, sound discrimination games, and engaging fun, interactive practices to make learning enjoyable and effective.
Language Disorders
The SLP will support children with expressive and receptive language disorders by helping them develop the ability to understand and use language effectively. Through targeted activities and exercises, they will enhance children's vocabulary, comprehension, and overall communication skills, fostering improved interaction with peers, caregivers and educators.
Social Communication Challenges
The SLP will target social communication by providing specific strategies to improve the ability to engage in conversations and understand social cues. Through engaging activities and personalized support, they foster essential skills that enhance children's interactions with peers and promote more effective communication. The SLP will demonstrate neurodiversity-affirming approach throughout the process.
Communicative Disorders Assistant / Speech-Language Pathology Assistant
(CDA/SLPA)
As a Communicative Disorders Assistant / Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, your primary focus is to implement therapy plans established by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist. Your clinical day may consist of:
Preparing Therapy Materials
Preparing speech therapy materials involves selecting tailored activities and resources for clients. This may include the preparation of visual aids and interactive games to encourage communication.
Providing Therapy
Under the SLP direction and supervision, providing speech therapy involves working with individuals in one-on-one sessions to address specific communication issues, as well as facilitating group therapy where clients can practice skills in a social setting. It involves using various techniques and activities to help improve their speech, language, and communication abilities.
Consult Caregivers
Consulting caregivers is an integral process which includes providing updates to align on progress towards goals. Caregivers receive tailored home strategies to support communication goals, fostering collaboration and empowering them the tools needed for effective communication at home.
Write Notes, Consult SLP
Writing progress notes is crucial for tracking a client's progress over time. Consulting the SLP can confirm individual progress towards meeting therapy goals and highlight the need for any adjustments in therapy plans for better outcomes.
